The mark draws from the tradition of the Japanese hanko.
Philosophy
The mark draws from the tradition of the Japanese hanko — the personal seal used for centuries to authenticate, sign, and claim authorship. Enclosed within a perfect circle, the letterforms are abstracted into a dense, interlocking composition that reads simultaneously as initials and as a single unified glyph. The circle is not decoration; it is containment, intention, and completeness. Like a seal pressed into paper, it carries weight.
The deep crimson red (beni, 紅) is the only hue the mark wears — base Beni on light grounds, Beni Light on dark. A deliberate reference to the ink of the stamp, and to the quiet authority that comes with it.
Mark on Backgrounds
The dashed ring shows the required clear space: inner radius ÷ 4 on all sides. Nothing may enter that zone.
| Background | Mark fill | Contrast | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Washi #E6E6E6 | Beni #900B20 | 7.46:1 AAA | Primary usage |
Yoru #1A1918 | Beni Light #B83A4E | 3.14:1 AA Large | Dark context — Beni Light only, never base Beni |
Yoru #1A1918 | Washi #E6E6E6 | 13.4:1 AAA | Alternate dark — when full neutral contrast needed |
Beni #900B20 | Washi #E6E6E6 | 7.46:1 AAA | Seal / print — reserved |
Size Scale
Below 24px screen / 12mm print, detail is lost and the mark no longer functions.
Clear Space
Minimum clear space = inner circle radius ÷ 4 on all sides. No text, imagery, or graphic elements may enter this zone. This breathing room is ma — it is part of the mark.
Unacceptable Uses
- Do not stretch, rotate, or skew the mark.
- Do not add shadows, gradients, bevels, or outlines.
- Do not change the internal stroke weight.
- Do not place the crimson mark on a busy photographic background.
- Do not rearrange or isolate internal elements.
- Do not redraw or approximate — always use the original vector file.
