The space between
Ma Design System
Two letters. The entire design system is built on the idea that the empty space is the design. The kanji 間 means “gate with light passing through”—which is literally what a well-designed interface does.
Seven Principles
Fukinsei 不均齊
Asymmetry. A 12-column grid is not a cage but a field of tension.
Kanso 簡素
Simplicity. Clarity is not the absence of complexity; it is its resolution.
Koko 考古
Austerity. Favour decisions that age well over those that trend well.
Shizen 自然
Naturalness. Code that reads cleanly. Type set with care.
Yūgen 幽玄
Subtlety. Work that suggests rather than declares.
Datsuzoku 脱俗
Detachment. The controlled exception that makes the convention visible.
Seijaku 静寂
Tranquility. White space is not empty; it is ma — the substance between things.
